How to Safely Spray Pesticide: Pump Sprayers, Steps

It is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to protect a fruit tree from insects and other vermin during the warm summer months without resorting to the use of pesticides or other chemical treatments. This may cause some people to have unfounded fears that the actual fruits will include detectable levels of the chemicals. If you follow the steps carefully, you should be able to exterminate all of the pests without infecting the tree itself. If you are going to be spraying chemicals, you will most likely be doing so with either a hand-held pump or a hose-end sprayer. Both of these types of sprayers have their advantages.

Pump Sprayers

If you use the pump sprayers, you will be able to determine the proportions of the chemicals in the mixture with greater precision. You won’t have much success in terms of the distance you can spray it. In most cases, it won’t be able to get to the tops of the trees. This can be accomplished with the hose-end sprayers. However, obtaining the appropriate proportions of the chemicals can be quite difficult. To get the right ratio of chemicals, it is essential to have a good understanding of your water pressure, but water pressure is not always stable. It’s possible that one day it will be lower; if that happens, the number of chemicals in your food will increase. The types of materials that you purchase for applications involving hoses are typically found in an extremely robust form. Before they can be applied safely, they need to have a significant amount of water added to them.

When you are combining the chemicals for the spray, it is imperative that you do so in accordance with the directions. Because you are working with potentially harmful chemicals, it is in your best interest to follow the guidance of experts and put on the appropriate protective gear at all times. Always make sure to protect your hands by donning some rubber gloves before handling chemicals like this. Make sure you stick to the measurements on the package exactly. In this situation, estimation is not going to work, and you run the risk of either killing your tree or not killing any bugs at all. In most cases, you should begin by adding the appropriate quantity of pesticide and then proceed to fill the container with all of the water.

Steps

The spraying process will now begin. The objective is to spray an equal amount across all of the different areas. You still don’t want to spray so heavily that there is enough moisture left on the leaves for them to fall off. In most cases, you will find that it is necessary to obtain a ladder in order to get within spraying distance of all of the various parts of the tree. Use even and complete strokes when applying the pesticide so that it reaches every part. Never go over the same section twice, as this is when condensation will begin to form on the surface.

If you are working with a mature tree that is quite large, you should position yourself on a ladder so that you are standing underneath the trunk’s base. Spray all of the segments, starting from the inside and working your way out. When you have finished spraying the exterior of the canopy, you are free to leave that area and continue working on the remaining components. When you are finished cleaning, you need to make sure that every piece of equipment you used, including your clothes, is cleaned off completely and thoroughly. You shouldn’t wash the rest of your family’s clothes in the same load as the clothes you wore while spraying.

When you are spraying for insects, the most important thing to remember is to keep the insecticide from falling onto the ground. When this takes place, the pesticides will be taken up by the tree’s roots and then transported to the fruits that are actually growing on the trees. If the pesticides remain on the surface of the fruit and you give it a thorough washing before eating it, you won’t have to worry about getting sick from eating the fruit even if it has been treated with poison.
